This airport, located in Kirishima about 30 km northeast of Kagoshima City, is the 2nd-busiest airport in Kyushu after Fukuoka Airport. Japan Air Commuter, a regional affiliate of Japan Airlines, has its headquarters here. Convenient by car due to the nearby expressways.
A major JR Kyushu railway station in the city Kagoshima, and the southern terminus of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Also served by the Kagoshima Main Line and Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line. Before the Kyushu Shinkansen opened in 2004, the station was called Nishi-Kagoshima Station.
Through its various domestic routes this local airport makes the unique Amami Oshima Island accessible from the rest of Japan.
